True Rob, I'm not disappointed with it at all really, it's just not quite
hand-hold able for extreme Macro shots unless the light is really quite
good.  Also the build quality kind of gets to me.  But, its so darn good
otherwise none of that really matters.

You might resolve your biggest gripe with the lens if you consider what is
happening when you focus 1:1. At 1:1 the lens elements are moved far from
the
focal plane so the light gathering area at the focal plane is receiving only
a
small percentage of the entire image circle projected by the lens, hence the
reduction in apparent brightness. So don't be disappointed macro lenses all
behave similarly.
