Maybe they aren't. According to a link that Anders provided "http://www.deltaco.se/" the connector on the *ist D is USB 1.1 and 2 capable and also provides video connection. It appears to also be used on Canon EOS-1D, EOS-1DS, a number of Nikon Coolpix, Panasonic and Toshiba cameras. So it's not in such bad company.
