The route Bill gave is fairly easy. Nothing terrifying along it at all.

Marnie, Marnie, Marnie,if you're in Boone Thursday, you're 30 minutes or
less from the mountain. Come on up. If you've got a rental car, it's route
105 from Boone to Linville, turn left at 221 in Linville, then only 2 1/2
miles up the mountain to the entrance. If the cell phone gods are smiling,
give me a call at 704-718-0228 and we'll meet you at the GFM entrance.

Okay, I'll see what I can do. I may or may not have my own rental car.

The thing is, we have a local mountain, Mt. Diablo, elevation 3,850 feet above sea level, and Grandfather mountain is higher than that. There are hairpin turns and drop offs on Mt. Diablo, and I wouldn't drive to the top. I tried about six to eight months ago and got nervous and went back down. I mean it's not THAT bad, but I had a fairly big car and I didn't feel comfortable. And, truthfully, I am turning into a scaredy cat in my old age (ever since I got stuck on the side of a steep, steep local hill that I couldn't turn around on -- stuck on private one lane road with a sharp drop off. I only got out of that one by asking a local resident to turn my car around in his driveway. I was actually chasing a far away view of Mt. Diablo at the time for a good shot. :-))

So I am not sure how far or bad the drive is up GFM, and if I want to do it. I understand the conference is not at the summit, though.
