i have done this frequently, you will end up with a crippled system in the
sense that your video, network, and sound hardware probably won't work after
it finishes rebooting multiple times, but then you can install new hardware
drivers. you may end up in Safe mode a few times. however, since you don't
know the exact history of the drive's contents, it's better to just format
and do a clean install.
