I think all new machines use a form of uni-channel where you balance a master channel and the machine "corrects" for different film types. Most, if not all, still have channels in the sense that if the printer can't read the DX code on the film the operator can tell the machine what type of film is being printed. I think most if not all machines have the capability of backprinting printing info but not all companies set them up to do so. (See previous comment on trained monkeys lab technicians).
