Actually, Frank, Norman Rockwell was a great photographer. All his painting were first shot on film in his studio then he painted the picture using the photo as a reference. Remember, he started out before color photography. I tend to think of him as an illustrator rather than an artist myself. Maybe the best illustrator of American life who ever lived. Of course American life is no longer much like what he illustrated, and probably was never quite as nice as he made it out to be.

Norman Rockwell:

He was an illustrator, quite famous for his American patriotic and "slice o' life" magazine cover illustrations. He seemed to specialize in tow-headed youths, doing stuff like getting haircuts, going fishin' and stuff like that.

I don't know that he was a "great artist", or even an artist at all (whatever the heck an artist is - sorry, don't want to get into that one again <g>), but he was a wonderful and well-loved illustrator in his time. I don't know that he captured America in the 40's and 50's, rather I think he presented a fantasy of what Middle America thought it wanted itself to be.

I seem to recall that he painted more than one (but at least one) young boy in a barber's chair, which is why I thought of him when I saw Gonz' photo.

Despite what may seem a cynical view of old Norman, I meant it as a compliment when I mentioned Rockwell in the context of the photo.

cheers,
frank

Hi!

I am with Frank on this one. Except the Norman Rockwell reference. I simply don't know who it is - don't beat me, ok?

I am stealing your idea for future reference <g>...
