TOKYO (Nikkei)--Asahi Glass Co. (5201) is expanding its chlorofluorocarbon disposal
business.

The firm recently boosted annual CFC disposal capacity at its Chiba plant 10-fold to
1,000 tons at a cost of close to 500 million yen. The site collects for a fee CFCs
used as refrigerant in car and business-use air conditioners, as well as vending
machines. The CFCs are then heated to more than 1,000 C and broken down into CO2 and
fluoric acid.

The firm believes demand for CFC disposal will grow as the automobile recycling law
takes effect in January.

Asahi Glass will also start licensing CFC disposal technologies to companies wishing
to obtain carbon dioxide emission rights under the Kyoto Protocol. Firms disposing of
CFCs can obtain the right to emit large volumes of CO2 at low cost because CFCs'
greenhouse effect is more than 10,000 times that of CO2.
