if you focus too close, the retaining for the rear element touches the rubber ring in the front of the converter. it's safe only in manual focus mode and even then, you have to be careful. the L converters aren't really 100% compatible with much, just the A* and FA* lenses 300mm and longer except for the FA* 400/5.6. it has the drawbacks i describe. the S versions will not touch anything. if that is the only long FA* or A* lens you own, i suggest forgetting the L converters and just use S or the 1.7X AF converter.
