I found a way around this by setting the compensation to Standard
Windows Color... but this only works permanently in Adobe ImageReady.
Photoshop won't remember this setting no matter how I apply it: Every
time I bring up a new image I have to change the compensation manually
again.

I don't *need* to, but I like to do so for my own site because Save For
Web gives smaller file sizes by stripping out extraneous data like EXIF
information.
