Paul, I've got the PIE 3600 Pro, which may use many of the same parts. But, I have never had any other scanner, so can't really tell you how good it is compared with other scanners.
I'm satisfied with my 3600. Both Vuescan and Silverfast are available as third party software packages, but I tend to stick with PIE's software because it's faster.
I have scanned a few slides, and the 3600 does NOT do a good job with shadows. OTOH, it seems quite satisfactory for negative film. The ability to scan an uncut roll, coupled with Firewire, is a nice touch. I scan rolls in low res mode in preference to having a contact sheet printed when I have film developed, which helps cut costs. It takes about 40 minutes to get 24 shots scanned as TIFFs at 1800 DPI, which is plenty of resolution to evaluate shots.
Color balance is always a little off, but that's easily fixed in almost any editing program. Hope that helps.

Not happy with lo-res scans on CDs and the labs want an outrageous price for hi-res scans. Thinking about getting a Pacific Imaging 3650 Pro - Anyone have any experience or insights into this?
