Mounting the camera to the tripod will give you a lot more vibration than mounting the lens tripod collar.
I have the same conclusion as William. Mounting through the lens collar induces more vibration that through the camera. The balancing theory is a myth imho, for not so heavy lenses like F*300/4.5 at least. Did some tests with my F*300/4.5 and the difference was obvious.
