Hm... Could be that the colours are a bit too much on some monitors. Beyond
the marshland, there is a complicated landscape with steep hills. The curve
1/4 way down is the horizon, as you guessed. There are multiple curves and
lines from hill-side contours, but to be honest, I didn't see them in this
photo until now. The big soft blob just below the horizon in the middle must
be a bit of fog on the treetops, I think.

Using the curves tool on the web-picture, I got this:

It's not pretty in other respects, but it yields more detail in the
background (on my monitor, at least).
