OK, after about 6 hours of playing with the PF1800 here is what I come up
with:
http://www.donsauction.com/PDML/TheCatSm.jpg

This was taken on Fuji Reala and the negative is sharp enough that with a
loupe I can count just about every hair on the face.
Camera was a 5n with a Vivitar Series 1 28-210mm AF zoom at about 210mm.
Exposure F8 at an unknown shutter speed.
Sharpened a bit in scanning and a bit more in PhotoBrush. No other changes
except a little cropping.
This is a 800x532 jpeg at 80% quality when saved.
Is this unacceptable quality or am I just expecting too much?
The 4x6 from the one hour photo is almost this good.
