Are you using Cyberview? And are you scanning negs or 'chrome? That scanner is not going to scan into the shadows on slide film, and is not going to give good color balance with neg film unless you post process with an editor.
However, using post processing with neg film should give good results, provided that you come to accept that the "grain" you see on-screen will happen with any scanner, including higher-resolution models.
If you want to try third party software with it, I'd recommend SilverFast over Vuescan. I've tried both with my PF3600.
