If you think about it, the flash output bezel becomes a huge softbox at macro levels. 1:1 insect shots, with small apertures, require the flash to be very close to the subject to make sure enough light gets to the film.
A bonus is that, assuming there is adequate flash output, the flash duration will be very short and a high level of motion freezing effect will be available. You only need to be sure that the circuitry is capable of quenching the flash fast enough. A few experiments will suffice to check this.
