i just checked out the price of the Pentax 145mm clear (no effect) SMC
protection filter for my A* 400/2.8. it's $519 from B&H. i never use a
filter on my lenses unless i am using it's effect. it's another pair of lens
surfaces to keep clean and, even though most of my filters are multicoated,
more chances for flare. i use lens hoods.
