Tom,

I wasn't about to prolong the thread, but you're
right.  Schwinn makes some fine bikes these days.  I
have to admit, though, when I hear the word Schwinn, I
think of Captain Kangaroo selling those 45 pound
cruisers to us kids ("prices slightly higher in the
south and in the west") every morning on TV.  I
thought you Americans were so lucky because you could
by Schwinns!

19 pounds, BTW, is not that heavy for a road bike. 
I'd guess that most of the guys in the Tour are racing
16 pound bikes, maybe lighter for the mountain stages
(I think Lance's was too light, so they had to tape a
small weight on it or something).  My track bike is
around 18 1/2 pounds, but it's not tricked out with
lightweight components at all, and the aluminium frame
is designed for stiffness over lightness.

I know several amateur racers whose bikes weigh in at
around 18 pounds, so your 19 pounder, especially
several years ago, is quite respectable.
