UK shipping and/or delivery costs are extortionate, too.

[Long, off-topic anectdote follows. You have been warned]

I've just picked up a few items of crockery on eBay. The total
weight when packed for shipping is around 8kg. To have the items
shipped from the UK seller to me here in California is going to
cost something close to $80, even using the lowest-cost surface
mail option (that's somewhat more than I paid for the items!).
That's actual shipping costs as charged by the Post Office, not
some artificially inflated figure tacked on by the seller.

I figured that into my bid limit price, so I'm still satisfied
with the overall cost. We recently decided that the stoneware
we chose as a wedding present (and which Hornsea then promptly
discontinued the following year) was going to be used more often,
rather than sitting around being saved for special occasions.
(If we can keep the breakage rate down to something comparable
to what we've experienced so far, the crockery will outlast us).
But we occasionally ran low on plates, so picking up a few more
in the two sizes we use most often seemed like a good idea.
