Don't know whether it would have worked in your case, but I thought I'd pass along a 
successful method of salvaging unreadable jpegs that I found out.
I use ACDSee, and there is this "Convert" command for converting between common image 
file formats.
When I encounter a damaged or unreadable jpeg, I tell it to "convert" it to "jpeg", 
and voila, the jpeg is readable again...
