Twenty-some years ago I worked for a small automotive magazine in New York. We did a lot of our own photography, including covers and spreads. I shot most of the big stuff with my Speed Graphic and Wollensak 127 lens. Our studio was a janitor's closet on the 6th floor of the old Hearst building on 57th street. For this shot I bought twenty yards of black gabardine at Macy's (they asked if I was making a nun) and piled it around four boxes that I had stacked in the closet. The lights were tungsten. I couldn't get a great lighting arrangement and ended up with some real hot highlights, but they worked okay with the prismatic starburst filter on the front of the Wollensak.
