Thanks for your comments. This is an out of camera composition/crop. The foxes were smaller in the original image. That's likely the cause of the softness you noted. I don't remember what focal length I was at... probably not all the way to 300.

That said, I've been satisfied with the 28-300 (it's actually my wife's lens)... on the slow side of course, but it and AF is what's needed in this situation when you turn a corner, see the animals, jump out of the car before the opportunity goes away, and walk the tightrope between approaching them for a better shot vs. frightening them away.

In this case I had about 5 minutes with them before another car drove by.

great shot - perfect composition. They look very curious.

Regarding sharpness the shot could be a little bit sharper. I assume
you used the lens at 300 mm handheld. Is the slight softness due to
the lens or due to vibrations? Are you content with the lens?
