I guess you have to decide for yourself if its the destination (images) or the trip 
(gear & usage of that gear).
For my outdoor photography its both. I truly enjoy going to the places that I 
photograph & bringing  back images of that experience is the icing on the cake. But in 
places like Katmai N.P. the experience of being there observing those magnificant 
brown bears is just incrediable. The fact that I've captured images of the experience 
is almost secondary. 
Having said all that I do find that I will shoot as much as it takes. That doesn't 
mean I don't spend time waiting, seeing & composing.

Truly excellent article, I've printed it out and put it on the end table
with my photography books.
I often decide my photos would be better with a newer/fancier piece of gear.
Maybe this article and the MX will help squelch that idea when it pops up.
