I can believe that, he did not do his own processing, or so it is said. Now his lab tech probably cropped some of his images. And certainly his editors did. You have to allow editors cropping space or they will not buy the images.

The interesting thing is that like a lot of famous photographers, most of his work shown as diffinative of his work was done very early in his carreer. After that it was relentless PR.

I do firmly believe that capturing an exact instant can produce photos with a solid story to them. And he did that by anticipation, not 10 frames a second. Actually good studio and landscape photography use the same technique for capturing the story, only they set up the instant, so it is easier to capture.
