While I don't doubt that the above quote is accurate,
I do doubt that it amounts to instructions to his
developer or printer.  The following is written in red
letters above his images on the Magnum site:

"Restrictions : Do not use for advertising purposes.
This photo may not be cropped or trimmed in
reproduction."

So, in light of the prior lines, your quote may be
more instructions to subsequent purchasers of his
photos.

As I said earlier, he "almost never" cropped.  He
didn't like to.  But his developer, Gassman, said it
did occur.  And "Derriere la Gare St. Lazare" is proof
of it.

It in no way dimishes the man, his work, or his
impact, IMHO.
