Most IR ports operate at speeds that make USB seem like greased lightning. Trying to upload tens of Mb of data over an IR port would be painful. The new high-end Nikons offer 802.11 wireless; if you really want this feature, you could always buy one of those (either that, or wait a year). This is one area where the P&S digitals seem to be ahead of the DSLRs; many of them come with PictBridge compatibility and/or cradles that let you drop the camera in the cradle and push one button; the images are then automatically uploaded to your computer (and, if you so choose, deleted from the memory card in your camera).
