After mounting an AF Pentax lens to an AF Pentax body, I always rotate the focus ring slightly so that I hear and feel the AF drive pin "click" into place. How many people do this, as opposed to waiting until the next time the camera tries to autofocus, when the same "click" has to happen before the lens can be focused by the camera? It seems it's a good idea to do this as a matter of course, since it avoids the slight delay of waiting for the drive pin to line up with the slot on the lens. I also don't like the idea of the drive pin being pushed in and not clicked home for a long period of time.
I also do this after manual focusing an AF lens, after I switch the camera back to AF.

Kostas, I have found that mine does not autofocus well on the *ist D, especially in low light. You may need to be certain that you are focusing on a subject with high contrast and strong lines, especially if you are using the central sensor only. Then it will autofocus.
It also had problems autofocusing this lens with my PZ-1p bodies. Upon attaching the lens, I needed to twist the focus ring just a bit until the autofocus drive engaged. Then it would work okay. You might try this.
It is an early autofocus lens, introduced in 1987. I am not sure why it does not autofocus better with later bodies, but it doesn't. I wonder if other F lenses have this problem. Some people have no problems with it.
