Comments are nonetheless invited. We have been going to Maui every other year since 1980, and it is by far our favorite place. Of course, we stay in a condo near the beach, so I can dive or snorkel every morning Makawao is "upcountry," separated from the beach by 40 minutes of road and a thousand feet or so of altitute, on the side of a dormant 10,000 foot volcano. One of the places we always visit when on the island, Makawao is a "cowboy town," home to the paniolos who still tend beef cattle on horseback. On the Fourth of July weekend, they have a big parade, followed by a three day rodeo, which is on the Budweiser Rodeo Circuit. It also is home to a vibrant and growing community of artists, mainland retirees, quite a few native Hawaiians, and more than its share of the "free spirits" that gravitate to Maui and help make it colorful. Polli's Mexican Restaurant stands out, even in a colorful town like Makawao. With that sign, you just HAVE to get something to eat there. Plus, it was voted the Best Mexican Restaurant on Maui by the readers of the only local newspaper. (Yes, there are other Mexican restaurants on the island!)
