Hi Hans, I just measured the plug, it's definitely 2.5mm, it's base is only 6.6mm diameter and just fits in the depression on the *ist D body. This is why I chose a moulded assembly for my cable as solder types are generally much larger behind the connector (it's also very conveniently "L" shaped so the cable exits without causing undue stress on the camera socket).
