Decidedly non-technical, but how I'd try to explain these things to a tyro: 1: Diaphragm: A mechanical device that varies the amount of light that a lens allows allows to pass though it. Think of it as analogous to an eye's iris. 2: Aperture: The actual "hole" in the above-mentioned diaphragm. 3: How we measure the size of the "hole" through with the light passes. I don't know the exact formula, but basically the smaller the number, the larger the hole. The larger the number, the smaller the hole. Opening an aperture by one stop means allowing twice as much light to go through the lens. Conversely, closing by one stop allows 1/2 the amount of light through.
