If I guess correctly, you need to remove the front filter retaining ring, then you can access to 3 screws which holds the focus mechanism in position. Somehow they have been shifted and needs to be adjusted (mounted on camera). Low strength threadlock has to be applied afterward. You should not need to actually get inside the helicoid.

Thannks a lot Rob. What worries me is, that I never took this part of it
apart - so the helicoid hasn't been moved. I wonder what could be wrong?
