Last Saturday was the first time I tried to use the particular
equipment combination of *ist-D + 1.7x AF Adapter + A* 300/2.8

I was more than a little irritated to find that with this setup
I seemed to be restricted to just the central auto-focus sensor.
For the sort of shots I want this combination for (mostly head-
on car shots, often with the car coming into view over a crest)
I want to focus below center of frame. Pre-focussing is one
approach, but the limited depth of field with that setup with
the lens wide open means the plane of focus is often not where
I want it to be. So I tried auto-focus, but for one reason or
another I ended up with almost no usable shots from the day.

(It's not the AF system, either; I went back to the same spot
on Sunday using the FA* 250-600 and a below-center AF sensor,
and ended up with a significant number of satisfactory shots).

I'm hard-pressed to think of a reason why the camera can't use
the whole range of AF sensors. For that matter, I can't recall
ever being aware of this problem with the MZ-S, and I'm pretty
certain I'll have used that body with the 300 & AF adapter.
