Hi Bob,
There is a coupler between the shutter release and the shutter release
bar that triggers the shutter. Apparently, the top was taken off and the
coupling lost. The self timer operates the shutter in a different manner and
does not require this coupling. Try using a shutter release cable with a
long throw or a tooth down through the shutter release button.
Where the mirror sticks up indicates that the second curtain is not
completing its travel as it is responsible for releasing the mirror.
