If I remember correctly, operating the DOF preview lever around the shutter release does the same than the green button in manual on the *ist D (I usually use the green button however). So as the *ist Ds HAS DOF preview this COULD work similarly. If this worked like on the *ist D, the cheaper model could be the better choice alltogether.
