If it's the volume I think it is, the author is probably one G. Legman
(although that's almost certainly a psudonym).

There's also a fairly good book on limericks written by one of the
Baring-Gould family - also responsible, amongst other things, for the
wonderful "Annotated Sherlock Holmes", and, IIRC, the well-known hymn
"Onward Christian Soldiers".
