I have 1GB Lexar 80x, 1GB Sandisk extreme and 1GB Sandisk Ultra II. The Ultra II seems to be a fraction of a second slower than the two others, both of them approximately 9s.

I usually prefer the Sandisk cards, as they have a smoother surface making them easier to get out of the camera...

This arrived yesterday. It is blazingly fast -- the *ist D will write a raw file to it in about 9 seconds.

It now accompanies my Lexar 1 GB 40X -- to which the *ist D will also write a raw file in about 9 seconds.

In other words, don't bother with faster CF cards. The limit is the D's processing or write speed. Perhaps there are cameras with which they work better. I am now wondering whether even the 40X write acceleration gives any boost in write speed.

That said, the 40X cards are disappearing. Lexar is pushing the 80X ones.

Has anyone timed how fast the D will write a raw file to a normal speed SanDisk? Does someone want to time it to find out? I am wondering whether there is any point in buying the faster cards for the D.

The Lexar has a $40 rebate this month. It no longer comes with the jumpshot card reader, though, and the one that came with my 1 GB 40X would not work with the 80X. I had to go out and buy a card reader. That ate up most of the rebate.

Now if Pentax would just release a firmware update that could compress raw file sizes a bit. The Nikon files from the same sensor are much smaller.
