I can envisage many reasons, anyone who wants to keep data confidential for one but seriously I'm sure it has automation and control applications in environments like the one we read about during the Superbowl. I'm sure some cards either went astray or we mis-attributed during the night, an an efficient access management system could be easily designed around this security feature.
