Collecting coins and as much money as possible in other forms has been a popular pastime since long before the Romans! > That coin could well have been almost that worn when > whoever lost it was alive. yes, I know. It wouldn't have worn down like that while it was buried. Before we decimalised here we had coins which had been in circulation for a lot longer than the time separating Domitian from Hadrian, many of which were almost as worn as the one in Jostein's picture. There is a website here with some very clear photographs of imperial coins, in chronological sequence. http://www.romancoins.info/12C-Vespasian.HTML The more I look, the more I think J's coin shows Domitian. After Hadrian they seem to have had a fashion for beards. Also the laurel crown and the ringlets of hair seem like a good match with Domitian's coins. Domitian had less of the characteristic 'Mister Punch' look about him than Vespasian (who is the original of Mr. Punch) and his other ancestors. -- Cheers, Bob
