I used pegasus for years. It runs on DOS or Windows, so it's not too
bloated. It's free to download and run, although the author, David
Harris, doesn't object to donations sometimes.

Pegasus is at: http://www.pmail.com/

Agent and Free Agent are located at http://www.forteinc.com. Free
Agent doesn't read mail, but Agent does. It's a rock solid mail app
with good filtering (uses regexps) and allows multiple folders. Also
no html. (this is a good thing)

Agent is US$29.

I've never had any virus problems with outlook, but I just find it
incompatible with the way I work.
