Starbucks uses that for marketing,

Starbucks The rest of the World
   TALL        ==             Small
GRANDE       ==             Medium
VENTE(SP?)   ==             Large

or else Starbucks only sells one size since they all more or less translate into large.

What, I wonder, is wrong with a simple:
Large
Larger
Largest
?

What's wrong? The mid-point is skewed!

Large is compared to what?

Other people's coffee cup sizes?

No point in belaboring it, I guess.
The world isn't going to change just because *I* think it's a foolish practice to label everything with excessives.
Big cars, big coffees, big popcorn, big everything! It becomes ludicrous.

Leads to a society of low self-esteem people, I'd think...
An average person is just that. Average. What's wrong with that? Nothing. Truth is, most of us are! And that's pretty darned good, truth be known... We all have items in which we excel. We all have characteristics we can (or should) be proud of. We all have knowledge, or skills, that are worth passing on ~ so we are teachers. All of that is worthwhile, even tho' it's "average."

Just like in business, when everything is categorized as "Urgent" or "Hot!" or "Special Attention" ~ then nothing is.
The meaning of whatever the top part of the scale is called is greatly diminished, and one has to search for some other way of expressing that upper portion of the 'comparison scale.' Best becomes almost meaningless.

Just a pet peeve... Sorry.
