Hi,
This is my assignment for the May gallery.
Alin Flaider's Springtime Dance:
Good title, I immediately identified the couple of
flowers dancing. I like the composition, the right
flower with the two 'arms' up, and its 'partner'
looking down.
Better if: at least in my screen, the colours look
soft. I would like to see more 'powerful' colours.
Related to that, the background is disturbing and it
seems that it can somehow soften the foreground. I
know it is difficult to avoid, but maybe Photoshop
could eliminate or blur it more I hope this last
thing don't sound like 'heresy' for you.:)
I think it would be also a nice b&w composition, with
a plain background.
Chris Brogden's Landing:
Well, in this case the image suggests me something
like 'committing suicide'. The branch seems ready to
stab the bird. (sorry for the gore here).:)
The blurred gives a sense of movement, but I would
prefer a little bit less. My first instinctive
reaction was to place bird and branch in different
planes, with no connection.
I like the two-colour background (black/green), it
accentuates separation between earth and air.
As you say, circumstances were difficult and the
result really acceptable. Nice snapshot.
Dan Maytola's Different Times:
I also hate grey days, specially the really overcast
ones, when there is a big difference when metering the
sky and the subject, and one never knows how to shot
(it happened to me this weekend).
The sculpture is really attractive, and it is a nice
idea to connect both clocks. I would prefer to have
the Big Ben more at the left, with more space between
them and, this way, having a more 'landscape-type'
composition. Maybe it was not possible there.
The image has a grainy aspect, but I think that it
woks fine here. The Parliament's clock seems a little
in the middle of the fog.
Cotty's Diver, Hereford, 2001:
Firs impression: a picture from an old Jules Verne
movie. This is due maybe to the b&w and the shape and
texture of the helmet and its old fashioned looking.
The expression of the face is attractive, too bad the
shadow covers one eye. I think that the main problem
that I see in this picture is the lighting, that
appears also reflected in the helmet. Nice and yes,
even funny.
Well, that is what the pictures suggested to me. I
hope you didn't expect more technical comments, I
don't have enough experience to talk at that level
with confidence.
Jaume
