Interesting. There's one living not far from me. I always thought it was either a custom paint job (there are lots of odd and colorful cars in Berkeley) or one of those deals where the car had been smashed up and different colored body panels from the wrecking yard were used as replacements. How neat to know it's a regular, perhaps limited production, VW.
