shopping for some new bookshelf speakers...
Just build a pair... (devilish grin). I've only spent a year on mine so far!
Here's a couple of pics from the latest modification. Sorry about the horrible quality; I used my Palm to take the photos.
I started with the two-way system I finished early this year: http://www.digistar.com/~dmann/speaker/temp/orig.jpg
The problem I had was that the tweeter (Vifa D19) is not really suitable for a two-way system. About a month ago I finally found a midrange driver I could use without too much box-modification, and without paying stupid shipping prices (www.madisound.com).
I mounted the midrange where the tweeter was - I had to slightly enlarge the hole and add an isolated chamber and an extra set of terminals on the back as the crossover is external. Then I made a mounting for the tweeter, based on a wooden knob I found at a hardware store. It's the kind of knob you might have at the end of a staircase. I did it this way because it was easy.

Yes it does look a bit strange but it's the best I could do. I'd like to have mounted the tweeter a bit lower but that would have involved some major mods to the box. I also made up a little circular cover for the tweeter which clips on using a couple of brass picture-frame D-rings:

A better view of a completed tweeter enclosure, taken before I mounted it:

The next step is to drop the crossovers and go active. The crossovers you can see in the photos is the old two-way one. The three-way is monstrous as it needed a lot of capacitance.
And yes, it was worth the effort. The speakers sound much, much better now. Playing Tori Amos at the moment :)
Cheers,
