Shadows/highlights is a godsend. It is so much more accurate than
dodging and burning in terms of dealing with discrete areas of a shot.
And the effect is more uniform and less damaging. If Ansel had
something like this, he wouldn't have had to make all those dodging and
burning tools :-). Seriously, do you think Shadows/highlights does
things that couldn't be done with levels, curves, and
brightness/contrast, if one applied all the actions correctly? I wonder
if anyone has looked at the code to see how shadows/highlights work. I
find it almost miraculous in its ability to adjust the range of a shot,
but I'm curious in regard to how it's accomplished. I now at least test
it against almost every shot. Sometimes I don't use it at all, but
quite often I give something a minor nudge. For backlit shots and other
contrasty situations, I will sometimes turn the handles hard.

I've found that when I'm through with the RAW conversion, the levels

your experience as well?
Sure is. If I've done the right things in the RAW conversion there is
generally
very little need to alter the levels or gamma in PS, the new
shadows/highlight
tool has negated a greatly the need to manually dodge and burn too.
Film scans
are a different matter. :-(
