It depends how badly I want the item. If I really want it, I snipe by placing my maximum bid in the last few seconds of an auction. If I don't want it as much, or if there's a lot of them on eBay, I'll place a smaller than maximum bid early on and then forget about it. If I win, I've got it for a great price. If not, no big deal.
