I recently purchased a color checker and white balance card (thanks Ann) and
I've been experimenting with the WB settings on the *ist D.

So far good news, shooting the color checker in bright sun at the Daylight WB
setting provides a very good match to the reference card on a pre-calibrated
monitor. But even better is the fact that shooting the same test scene after
taking a manual WB off my reference white card produces an image which is very
close in colour rendition to the Daylight WB shot. So much so that when I layer
the files in PS and use a difference function most of the test patches display
almost black indicating very little absolute difference exists between the two
files.

Cheers,
