Alan, I've had 7 MZ/ZX series that have done this.
In all but 1 case it's been the gear on the shutter
drive motor shaft coming loose and sliding out of 
position.
The sound is the motor spinning without effect.
I've been able to fix 5 of those 6 by sliding the
gear back into position and adding a tiny drop
of SuperGlue to the shaft to secure the gear.
The one I couldn't fix was because I used too
much glue and stuck several things that shouldn't
be stuck together. :-(
The seventh example appeared to be a micro-processor
that went insane and drove the motor all the time.
Of the 5 I've fixed they all still work AFAIK.
The repair is difficult because of the amount of fine
dis-assembly required. The gear is only about 2mm in
diameter. Each repair has taken me well over 2 hours.
