Hi Frank,

There are actually a couple of 70-210 A lenses -- the SMC version, and the
Takumar (non-SMC) version. I've got an SMC version that had this problem.
Under the rubber collar was a long strip of tape running parallel to the
optic axis of the lens. Under the tape I found one screw that was securing
a nylon (??) washer in a groove milled into the barrel. (This groove also
runs parallel to the optic axis of the lens.) Tightening this lens causes
the washer to expand somewhat and put pressure against the sides of the
groove. This will keep the zoom collar from slipping when the lens is
pointing straight up or straight down. Make sure and replace the tape after
tightening the screw.

Hope this helps.
