For my money, the NiMh are the way to go. I was getting about 1000 shots on my *ist D, in Alaska, last September between charges - no flash usage, but I did do some in camera edit at the end of the day's shoot. I'm using Ray O Vac's 2000ma's that recharge in 15 minutes I've got about $ 50 into 8 AA's and the charger.
