Hi Markus,

I'm glad that you enjoyed the pic. I had the lens focus wound out to 1:1 and
the 1.7AF TC as I mentioned so the working distance from the tip of the
extended hood was about 275mm (See pics below). The only light source was the
single Metz flash operating in TTL mode set at an angle of -10 degrees with the
head in the tele position. It covers small subjects like a diffuse source so
the shadows aren't too bad and since it's providing illumination primarily from
above (in landscape orientation) it ends up looking pretty naturally lit.

Even though the exposure was made in bright daylight the aperture was such that
only the bright reflection of the sky in the flys mirror like carapace is the
only evidence of natural light. I prefer TTL flash though I generally have test
it and add an exposure compensation offset for the particular subject. Using
TTL means that I can work in aperture priority without messing with the flash
too much. I haven't used my AF280T with this set-up but I will when I get a
chance, though I would expect it to behave much differently.

Cheers,

Hi Don,

Thanks. I seriously try not to drink caffeinated drinks when I'm out shooting
in low light but on this occasion I was saved by flash and a relatively small
aperture. The fact was that the leaf the little guy was on was blowing in the
wind so it was all a bit hit and miss (and more miss I assure you).

See comments to Markus above regarding my unwieldy flash set-up, following are
a few Q&D shots of the gear fitted to my LX:
