Well as a technician I can say that most engineers are theorists. Doing prototype work I have often had to redesign stuff from the engineers. And i don't just mean obtuse stuff but thing where merely drawing a clearance curve on the drawing would have told any moron that it would not work.

But then most companies I have worked for don't seem to know the difference between a prototyping technician and an assembly line worker. Especially when it comes to pay.
